Shipping to and from Australia: what shapes the lane

Australian lanes have characteristics that catch shippers used to shorter routes, and most of them are about time and inland distance rather than about the sea freight rate.

Transit time is the constraint
Long ocean transits mean working capital tied up in cargo afloat, and they make schedule reliability worth more than a small rate saving. A cheaper service that adds a transhipment can cost more in inventory than it saves in freight.
Ask for the routing, not just the rate: direct or transhipped, and the number of port calls. That tells you more about arrival reliability than any quoted transit time.
Inland distance at both ends
Australian population centres are far apart, and a rate to one port plus road freight to another city is a very different total from a rate to the right port.
Specify the delivery city rather than the port, and make the forwarder quote to it. Otherwise you are comparing quotes to different destinations.
Biosecurity and admissibility
Australia applies strict biosecurity controls, and packaging, timber and contamination are common causes of intervention. An intervention costs time and storage, which is where detention and demurrage start accruing.
Ask the forwarder what they need from you on packaging declarations before shipment. It is far cheaper than fixing it at the border.
Seasonality
Capacity tightens around peak periods and rates follow. If your shipping is seasonal, that is worth planning around rather than discovering.
Where volumes justify it, ask what a contracted rate would look like against spot. The answer varies with the market and is worth asking rather than assuming either way.
